A breast lift can work wonders when a woman’s bosom has become stretched out and droopy. The droop of a bustline is called the ptosis. While a certain amount of ptosis occurs even in the youngest of breasts, excessive sag that often occurs with aging or after pregnancy, lactation or weight loss, can be very unattractive and cause the appearance of being older than one really is.

A breast lift is also called a mastopexy within the medical world. This is an elective operation that is performed by a cosmetic surgeon in a hospital or clinical setting. It takes from two to three hours in order to perform and the patient is often released from the hospital on the same day.

The type of incision that is used will depend on how much excess skin there is that needs to be removed. One type of incision results in a circular scar called a donut procedure. This incision surrounds the nipple and areola region and is used on the cases requiring the least amount of skin removal. Another type of incision is called the lollipop procedure and is used when a bit more skin and tissue must be removed.

The incision is similar to the donut, except with the addition of a vertical line beneath it, making it appear to be a lollipop. The next type of incision which would be used in the cases where the most skin would need to be removed is called the anchor procedure. The incision is similar to the lollipop, with the addition of an incision under the crease of the breast.

If there is amply fat and glandular tissue in the breasts, a mastopexy may be enough to give the bustline an improved and lovely look. If the volume of the breast has decreased over time, as well, an implant may be necessary in order to have the optimum result of a full and youthful breast.

If the insertion of implants is required, the augmentation procedure would be performed simultaneously with the lift. An implant is a medical device filled with either silicone or saline solution. Implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes, textures and protrusions. The type that is chosen will depend on the woman’s body size, bone structure and desired result. Personal preference as well as harmonious proportion are important in the decision making process.

Whichever method is chosen, the patient must realize that there will be scarring and it is permanent. The amount of scarring will depend on both the incision method and the patient’s individual healing response. All scars will soften and fade over time. Within six to twelve months, scars will have substantially decreased in visibility.

When a patient is ready to have a breast lift performed, an initial consultation with a reputable plastic surgeon will answer her question of “with or without implants”.
