Breast Implants – Surgical Decisions To Be Made

When a woman has finally made the decision to proceed with breast augmentation surgery it can feel like a major milestone. But this is just the beginning of the decisions to be made. First and most importantly is choosing the right doctor. Then there is the decision about what size will best achieve her goals. Finally, come the choices regarding the material, shape and type of boob implant. Along with this decision, there are a variety of additional factors which will affect the overall results.
Your doctor is the best person to work with in selecting the implant that aligns with your goals, body type and medical history. However, it’s always wise to be an educated consumer and be able to go into your consultation armed with questions. Here are a few things to ask about.
Pre-filled vs. filled during surgery
Saline implants are generally known for being filled during surgery and some models even allow for the volume to be adjusted after surgery through a valve in the implant. What is not as well known is that there also double-lumen silicone models that allow the surgeon to fill one layer of the implant during the operation and potentially even adjust the volume after the operation. The advantage of inserting an empty implant and filling during surgery is that the surgeon can use a smaller incision when inserting only the shell. Ultimately, this results in less scarring.
Incision location
There are usually three possible incision locations. The most common one is in the fold of the boob, which allows for the most precise placement but leaves a very visible scar. A less visible scar can be had if saline implants are used, by inserting the implants through an incision in the armpit. However, some surgeons find it difficult to achieve a symmetrical placement with this method. Alternatively, an incision around the nipple can lead to a less visible scar but this method is more likely to cause loss of sensation in the breast.
Implant location
There are generally three placement options for the implants. For women who have a small amount of breast tissue a natural look will most likely result from placement below the pectoral muscles. This placement is also most likely to retain it’s shape following pregnancy or other weight fluctuations. However, the patient will experience more discomfort and a longer recovery.
Patients who are done having children but not complain of pre-operative breast sagging can experience a shorter recovery time by having implants placed above the pectoral muscle but below existing breast tissue. There is also the option of placing it under one layer of the pectorals not the entire muscle.
