Making the decision to get breast implants can be a big step for a woman but once that initial step is taken, the following procedure can feel just as daunting. Here is an overview guide on what you will need to consider in order to look your best and feel good about the final results.
Choose your doctor
The first step is to choose a doctor who will be a trusted partner in the process. A good surgeon should welcome questions and answer them openly and to your satisfaction. They should discuss all of the risks, potential complications as well as the costs involved with the procedure. An experienced one will have recommendations based on your body type but will also carefully consider your goals and feelings and solicit your feedback to his or her suggestions.
Have a goal…but be flexible
If you have done some initial research and reviewed before and after photos, you should have a pretty clear idea of what look and size you want. Even so, you will want to be open-minded to your doctor’s suggestions. During the consultation, he will make several measurements of your breasts: from the top of the chest to the nipples, from the nipples to the bottom, between the breasts, and the width of the breasts. Additionally, he or she will test the skin stretch.
All of these measurements will affect what type and size will look most natural on you. For example, the width of an implant must be proportional to the natural breast. If there is a lot of skin stretch or a lot of space underneath, a woman will need larger implants to adequately fill this space. On the flip side, if there is a small, tight space underneath, an implant that is too large will bulge at the top. Improperly proportioned implants can lead to fake-looking results, which most women want to avoid.
Use cup size as a general guide rather than your only factor, as often breast implants do not appear as large as natural breasts in clothing. Implants tend to be wider than natural breasts, so a larger cup size might need to be worn in order to accommodate. Cup size also varies by bra style and manufacturer so it’s not a straightforward measurement.
If you are very flat-chested, keep in mind that almost anything will seem big at first, but you’ll probably adjust quickly. Ask your surgeon if they have kits that can be taken home and used for trying out different sizes and profiles.
The most common reason for breast implant surgery corrections is to replace the existing ones with a larger size so it may feel like your doctor is nudging you towards larger sizes. A good surgeon will be able to show you and explain exactly why they are making the recommendations, without trying to force a breast implant into your body.
