Breast Augmentation: Know About The Implants

In today’s culture, full breasted and curvaceous female body shapes are greatly valued. Little girls in our society grow up surrounded by media images of the ideal woman being one with full and ample breasts. Even children’s dolls, such as the classic Barbie doll, are large bosomed. If the ideal female hourglass body shape is not in a woman’s genetic makeup, being sentenced to a life with a flat chest can be an invitation to a low self esteem.
While many women are naturally small busted, others have lost their full breasts through childbirth and lactation. The skin may be stretched out and the glandular tissue shrunken. There are also women who have lost a breast to a mastectomy following a bout with cancer and who choose implants in order to reconstruct it.
The basic breast augmentation procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon and is usually done on an outpatient basis, which means no overnight hospital stay. Small incisions are made in either the armpit area, beneath the breast tissue or under the nipple and areola. Each of these locations is inconspicuous where the scarring won’t be very noticeable. Through the opening of the incisions, the surgeon places an implant filled with a silicone substance or a saline solution. The implant may be positioned either behind or in front of the muscle wall.
If the breast is very saggy due to being stretched out from nursing a baby, a breast lift, or mastopexy, may be performed simultaneously in order to achieve a more youthful appearance. If the implants are used during a reconstructive process, the procedure will be performed in stages coinciding with the patient’s cancer treatments, in order to have the most optimum outcome.
Implants that contain saline may be filled during the operation in order to have flexibility in the size that is desired. The silicone ones are prefilled and sealed before surgery. The devices may be shaped in either a round or tear drop manner. They come in a variety of protrusions, as well, in order to align most naturally with a woman’s body type and profile.
For a traditional augmentation with silicone implants, it is advised by the F.D.A. that a woman wait until she is twenty-two years old before undergoing the procedure. The F.D.A. is a governmental monitoring agency of safety issues with food, drugs and medical devices. For saline implants, it is advised that the patient wait until she is eighteen years of age. These recommendations are made because the woman’s body is still developing and the tissue will continue to grow and develop into the early twenties.
