Breast Augmentation: Exciting New Developments In Lipoaugmentation

You may have heard reports over the past few years that a procedure has been developed that uses fat injections for cosmetic breast augmentation. Lipoaugmentation sounds like every woman’s dream – the chance the remove unwanted fat from someplace like the stomach or thighs and use it to add fullness to the breasts. The procedure is usually performed by injecting small amounts of fat into several locations throughout the breast to create a grafting effect.
As would be expected, it has taken some time for the risks of this procedure to be analyzed and for the procedure to be received in the medical community. Concerns have been that it may cause trouble with mammograms or that the fat may be reabsorbed into the body. Recently released study results provide some good news.
First, the American Society of Plastic Surgery presented the results of a study of 50 recipients finding that the procedure did not obscure mammography or otherwise interfere with cancer detection. A separate study found the same results and both reported that patients were satisfied with both the look and feel of their breasts and the results of the liposuction following this augmentation option. As with other cosmetic procedures, lipoaugmentation is usually performed as an outpatient procedure but recovery can take several months.
One downside of the lipoaugmentation method of breast augmentation is that recipients must wear a tissue expander device for several weeks both before and after the surgery. This device is designed to create room for the injected fat to go. During the studies, negative results were received from patients who did not properly use the device. Another downside is that breast volume does remain stable as a woman gains or loses weight. The procedure is not for women who want dramatic results from breast augmentation as in most cases average retained enlargement was 1 – 1.5 cup sizes.
Finding a doctor who has experience with this cutting-edge procedure may take some time and careful research. Additionally, not every woman will be a good candidate for such a procedure – only a consultation with your doctor can answer this question. In the near future, the best results may still be found with proven implant materials, silicone and saline which offer a variety of placement options and shapes to provide great results. But for those who are patient and willing to make the effort, the results may well be well worth the wait.
