For woman who has recently decided to undergo breast augmentation, there are several additional decisions yet to be made. First is choosing a doctor, then selecting the right size and type. When a women thinks about selecting a type of breast implant it’s usually in the context of saline vs. silicone. But today’s market is full of options. Your doctor is the best person to work with in selecting the one that aligns with your goals, body type and medical history. However, it’s always wise to be an educated consumer and be able to go into your consultation armed with questions. Here is a primer on the terms to know.
Components
The main components are the shell, the filler and the patch. The shell, which may also be called the lumen or envelope, is made of silicone even when the filler, the material inserted into the shell, is saline. The patch covers the place where the filler is inserted into the shell.
These types of implants are generally known for being filled during surgery, utilizing a smaller incision and with some models even allowing for the volume to be adjusted after surgery through a valve in the implant. However, there are saline ones that come prefilled by the manufacturer, so make sure you know in advance what you are getting. On the other hand, there also double-lumen silicone models that allow the surgeon to fill one layer during surgery and potentially even adjust the volume after surgery.
Saline vs. Silicone
Silicone is an organic polymer that, coming in solid, liquid and gel form, has a variety of medical product uses including implants. These ones are often thought to have a more natural feel.
Saline is a sterile saltwater solution similar to the fluid that is present in the human body. It has been criticized unnatural and in some instances creating a “sloshing” noise once a part of the body.
Shape
Your doctor will make the necessary and suitable recommendations regarding the profile of the implants. High profile ones have a narrower base and project more than medium or low profile designs. Anatomical or teardrop-shaped ones are designed to have more volume in the lower portion, like a natural breast. These come with a textured outside surface to help keep them in proper position. Round ones are exactly how they sound, appearing the same from each angle regardless of whether their position changes.
